He is often called the &#8220;Father of the Indian Renaissance&#8221; for his efforts to modernize Indian society. Roy was a scholar of Sanskrit, Persian, and Arabic, and was deeply influenced by his study of the Upanishads and Western thought. He founded the Brahmo Samaj in 1828, a movement aimed at reforming Hinduism and promoting monotheism.
